The Solar systems of Today are Not the Solar systems of Yesterday
The switch to solar isn’t just about saving money; it’s about positioning your company for long-term success and sustainability.
With Zimbabwe’s ongoing power challenges and escalating utility costs, many CEOs and Board members are still shouldering the heavy burden of relying on costly diesel generators to keep their businesses running. In fact many spend a lot of time finding ways of passing the increased cost of production to the end user instead of finding ways of cutting the costs arising from running expensive and pollutive generators. It's understandable—this has been the traditional route for reliability. However, what if I told you there’s a more sustainable and cost-effective solution available right now?
Power cuts are here to stay at least in the short to medium term
I’m talking about solar energy. And before you dismiss it based on stories of failed projects from a decade ago, let me share with you how much has changed.
The Solar of Today is Not the Solar of Yesterday
In the past, solar technology in Zimbabwe faced several challenges—inefficient systems, smaller and inefficient panels, slow implementation, poor support, and lack of real-time monitoring. But today’s solar solutions are drastically different. Advances in technology mean more efficient solar panels, smarter inverters, energy storage, and real-time monitoring systems that allow you to track performance and identify issues immediately.
The pace of installation has improved as well, with projects that used to take months to complete now taking a fraction of the time. Panels are more efficient and easily optimised. Take for example our AIKO modules. Implementation partners (like us) offer full project lifecycle support, from initial consultation to maintenance, ensuring that your system works seamlessly from day one. The systems are also now modular, you can start with a smaller system and expand as your income and means improve. This was very difficult in the past.
Why Are So Many Still Sitting on the Fence?
The major issue I see time and again is hesitation. It’s easy to stick with what you know—diesel generators. They’re reliable, right? You buy a 300kw generator and it chugs along nicely. But they’re also a never-ending cost. Fuel prices rise, generators need constant maintenance, and there’s the environmental toll, not forgetting the rising costs of production which make you less competitive. In contrast, solar energy systems represent an upfront investment, but one that pays for itself over time and shields your company from volatile fuel costs and electricity tariff hikes.
For the forward-thinking executive, this should be an easy decision. Yet, many still hesitate because they’ve “heard solar doesn’t work,” or worse, they’ve heard horror stories of botched projects. To those of you holding back, I say this: a lot has changed, and those fears are now outdated.
Real Results in the Local Market
Across the country, companies in sectors like manufacturing, retail, and hospitality are quietly reaping the benefits of solar power. Not only are they cutting energy costs by 30% or more, but they’re also gaining energy independence—minimizing reliance on the grid and expensive generator fuel. For many businesses, the shift to solar is enhancing profitability and sustainability, especially in these challenging economic times. Whatever savings you make from solar can be passed to consumers in lower prices, or to you and your staff in higher salaries and perks. The cost of a 1 kwh of electricity in Zimbabwe has gone up. The highest rate of 26cents per kwh means you are paying USD260 per 1000 units of electricity. These costs quickly add up when you are a heavy user. The issue is not only affecting Zimbabwe but is affecting other countries too.
What’s the Cost of Inaction?
By continuing to depend solely on generators, your company is pouring money into a solution that doesn’t offer a long-term fix. With utility costs rising and supply becoming increasingly unpredictable, it’s time to rethink your energy strategy. Delaying the switch to solar could mean missing out on significant savings and the opportunity to position your business as an industry leader in innovation and sustainability.
